Disney Working On It’s Own Skylanders Style Game?

Uh-Oh. Well goodbye money, it’s been nice knowing you.

It’s no secret that Skylanders is one of the most popular franchises to come out of the gaming industry in recent years with the original selling like hotcakes and a newly released sequel performing just as well. So why exactly have we not seen other companies using the idea for their games? Well that looks like it could change with it being reported that Disney are busy working on a Skylanders clone of their own complete with Pixar and Disney characters. Does anyone hear that? Sounds like Scrooge McDuck diving into the pool of cash this game will rake in.

Supposedly titled ‘Disney Infinity’ information on the game has been outed by the Disney fansite Stitch Kingdom who have retrieved this from a video produced for retailers which will be used to educate them on the product as well as familiarize them with the content. Take this information as you will, but to me it sounds like a very likely possibility.

As mentioned, it is in fact in the same vein as ‘Skylanders.’ It will be available for Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Wii U, along with the Nintendo 3DS.

Gamers will start by purchasing the starter pack which contains the game, the ‘Disney Infinity’ reader (a device upon which the game’s figures and coins are physically placed), three character figures (Sulley, Captain Jack Sparrow, Mr. Incredible), a landmark figure (Monsters University) and a coin. So far all very Skylanders.

Could this be the logo?

Characters work as they do in Skylanders – by placing a character figure on the the reader (there are two character spots for co-op play), the gamer instantly takes on that character as their on-screen avatar. In addition to the starter characters, there will be individual characters  which will include “Mike Wazowski, Randall, Hector Barbossa, Davy Jones, Mrs. Incredible, Syndrome, Dash, Violet, Woody, Jack Skellington, Agent P, Rapunzel, Anna (Frozen), Ice Queen (Frozen), Sorcerer Mickey, Tow Mater and Francesco Bernoulli.” The landmark figures meanwhile are used to bring one of Disney’s favorite worlds into the game.

It’s not just characters that will be added however as, “After the starter pack is purchased, additional landmark tokens/playsets will be available as expansion packs and each expansion pack will contain two additional character tokens. At launch for ‘Disney Infinity,’ a Radiator Springs playset from Disney/Pixar’s Cars will be available complete with Lightning McQueen and Holly Shiftwell. Future expansion packs will include: The Lone Ranger with the Lone Ranger and Tonto; ‘Toy Story in Space’ with Jessie and Buzz Lightyear; and ‘Phineas and Ferb’ with Phineas and Ferb.”

Taking place in what is being called the “toy box”, gamers can explore and characters can freely interact with each other. Players can use toys and other items they have collected during play to construct and play with various objects.

Collectable coins will also be introduced to provide your character with added perks. These are supposedly placed under your figure in order to take affect. Characters may have up to two coins active at any time while playsets can have up to three coins. These are also be sold separately as blind-packs of two each. There will be three waves through 2014, of 20 coins each, or 60 in all.

Much like Skylanders it is reported that all information will be on disc so all characters will actually do is unlock the content.

So seems like Disney are being very ambitious with this idea. While we’ve had no confirmation from the House of Mouse as of yet, that this information is true or the game even exists, the evidence is starting to mount up. Disney would surely be crazy not to use this idea with their franchises. Who wouldn’t want a Simba and Genie figure to use in the game and interact. Already people in the office are warming to the idea a lot more than Skylanders and it just goes to show the power of Disney’s IPs. More as we hear it.
